Day Tour 6: Galle Fort and Southern Coast Tour

A day exploring the best-preserved colonial fortification in Asia – the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort – followed by a relaxed afternoon along the scenic southern coastline. The fort is a living town as much as a monument, layering the ancient, colonial and contemporary in a way that genuinely rewards those who slow down.

Key Highlights

Galle Fort Ramparts

A walk along the 17th-century Dutch-built outer walls with the Indian Ocean on three sides and sweeping views across the bay – most beautiful in the late afternoon light.

Dutch Reformed Church

The oldest Protestant church in Sri Lanka, built in 1755 and still in use today, with original tombstones embedded in the floor and a quiet colonial atmosphere entirely its own.

Galle Fort Lighthouse

A working colonial lighthouse at the fort’s southernmost point, offering views over the Indian Ocean and the deep-water harbour entrance.

Fort Lanes and Boutiques

Colonial-era streets now home to artisan galleries, handmade jewellery studios, Sri Lankan design shops, independent bookshops and exceptional cafes in beautifully restored buildings.

Southern Coast Beach Stop

An afternoon at Unawatuna, Mirissa or Weligama beach in the warm, golden light of the southern coast.
