Day Tour 10: Minneriya National Park Elephant Safari Tour

A safari to Minneriya National Park, home to the Gathering – one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles on earth, when hundreds of wild elephants converge on the ancient reservoir between July and October.

Key Highlights

The Gathering (July to October)

Hundreds of wild elephants converge on the Minneriya reservoir in one of the largest elephant congregations on the planet – a spectacle of natural abundance unique to this location and this season.

Ancient Minneriya Reservoir

A 3rd-century BC irrigation tank built by King Mahasena, still functional after 1,700 years – and precisely what draws the elephants in such extraordinary numbers as the surrounding landscape dries each season.

Toque Macaques

The endemic toque macaque – found only in Sri Lanka – is commonly seen in the forest margins foraging in social groups, most expressive and active in the cooler morning hours.

Sambar and Axis Deer

Large sambar and smaller spotted axis deer graze openly in the grassland, often visible alongside elephant herds in the open areas near the reservoir edge.

Waterbirds on the Reservoir

Pelicans, painted storks, purple herons, cormorants and a rich diversity of resident and migratory birds use the reservoir throughout the year.
